We want the Gore District to be the best place for people of all ages, including older people, to live and thrive.
Gore District has the third highest population over 65s when compared to surrounding regions and New Zealand. The Regional Economic Activity Data shows that 20.2% of Gore population is over 65 as at 2018. This is predicted to increase to 26% of the population over 65 by 2033. We need to ensure we keep people connected and build wider community awareness of the issues older people face in their daily life.
The Age-Friendly Strategy for Gore District was established to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the community now and into the future. This document will guide the work over the coming years.
The strategy focuses on creating a more enabling and inclusive environment that is supportive and accommodating of people of all ages. The strategy has assisted with building our knowledge and understanding of the needs of older people to enable the best things to be in place for the future, to become a truly intergenerational community, where people of all ages and stages interact and cooperate to everyone’s benefit.
The strategy sets out the priorities based on insights from workshops with our older community and agencies. These are:
We know it's important for the older people in our community to stay active and enjoy the facilities available in our CBD.
So, we've rolled out free parking and swimming for people aged 80 years and older.
Talk to the friendly staff at the Gore Aquatic Centre to receive your free swimming pass, or apply here for free parking.
We've put together a handy booklet about local services and connections for older people. You will find everything from how to improve your strength and balance to opportunities to volunteer.
In partnership with Emergency Management Southland and Ready for Living, we have put together a guide to local emergency preparedness, hazards and more information for older people.
