Response to Southland amalgamation proposal.
Gore District Mayor Ben Bell says the Council is open to conversations about how local government can provide a more efficient service for Southland. However, amalgamation is just one option, and further investigation is needed.
He was responding to Southland District Mayor Rob Scott’s proposal of a Southland District Council, Environment Southland and Gore District Council amalgamation.
Mr Bell said his priority was ensuring the Council does what is best for the Gore District.
Amalgamation was one of the many options for our Council as a potential solution to rising rates.
“It is important that we hear from our people about what they want when proposing large-scale service changes like this.
“I worry that the proposal, as announced, is factually incorrect, misleading and essentially selling struggling ratepayers hugs and rainbows,” Mr Bell said.
He was not opposed to having the conversation, but it is very important to recognise this must be in agreement between the two/three councils, and there needs to be a clear desire from our community that this is something they want, he said.
“We intend to have robust discussions and consultations with our residents to ensure any decisions we make are the right fit for the people of Gore."
