Council candidates encouraged to get nominations in
Gore District residents who want to make a meaningful contribution to their community are encouraged to get their nominations in for this year’s local body elections.
Gore District deputy electoral officer Frances Shepherd said that with only two days until nominations close, now was not the time for procrastination.
Nominations close at 12 noon this Friday 1 August.
“At this point, we will only have an election for the Gore District mayoralty and in the at-large ward.”
A by-election was on the cards for the Mataura Community Board with only two candidates and five seats, she added.
“Standing for your community was one of the most effective ways to help shape the District for future generations.
“Local government is responsible for some of the most important services we all rely on every day, as well as ensuring we have a voice regionally and nationally.”
Mrs Shepherd said that ideally, candidates would have a passion for the community, the ability to work collaboratively with others, and a district-wide vision.
“You do not need to be a policy expert or have a background in politics.”
The Council is made up of representatives from:
- Gore ward - five seats / five nominations to date
- At-large ward – three seats / five nominations to date
- Rural ward – two seats / two nominations to date
- Mataura ward – one seat / one nomination to date
The Mataura Community Board has five seats, but only two nominations have been received to date.
To be eligible, candidates must be New Zealand citizens, aged over 18, and enrolled to vote.
Anyone considering standing can download a nomination form from the Council’s election page (here's the link) or call into the Council’s main office, in Bowler Avenue.
Mrs Shepherd urged people not to leave it until the last minute to avoid disappointment.
