New Project Enhances Safety at Popular Park
Walking to one of Gore’s most popular parks is about to get a whole lot safer with Waka Kotahi NZTA’s new SH1/Railway Esplanade pedestrian crossing project.
Today marks the beginning of the project, which will see:
- A bulbous kerb pedestrian refuge on the west side of Railway Esplanade
- A pedestrian refuge island in the middle of the road, outside the Esplanade Motels
- A pathway from the crossing site to Hamilton Park’s entrance
- A pedestrian crossing area across the railway line, and
- Fencing along both sides of the railway line, south of the pedestrian crossing
The first stage, which will take about a month, is installing the refuge island.
To ensure our contractors’ safety, vehicles will need to reduce their speed to 30km/h in the area. There’s no right turn into Wentworth Street from SH1 – please detour via Hamilton Street.
Funding for this project has come from Waka Kotahi and the Government’s Better Off Fund.
Given the popularity of Hamilton Park and East Gore School being so close to this main road, we’ve asked Waka Kotahi to consider lowering the speed limit in this area to ensure better pedestrian safety and accessibility.
