Mataura dam levels still marginal
Water levels in the Pleura Dam, Mataura’s main water source, remain low despite recent rain.
Gore District Council 3 Waters Asset Manager Matt Bayliss said emergency pumping from the Mataura River was stopped last Friday. However, staff were closely monitoring the situation at the dam.
“The recent rain has just managed to keep things ticking over. However, all we need is a few dry days to be back to having to pump from the river,” he said.
The water tanker would stay in place outside the town’s community centre for the time being for residents wanting drinking water.
Mr Bayliss said the problem was being caused by the lack of water flowing into the dam, not how much water Mataura residents were using.
“Things were just so dry over spring and early summer that any rainfall is quickly soaked up.”
