Newcomers and Migrants

Kia Ora - Welcome to the Gore District

The Gore District Council and community welcome newcomers, ‘waewaetapu’, to create an inclusive environment for all people. These include recent migrants, international students, and Kiwis relocating within New Zealand.

We work alongside Immigration New Zealand to deliver the ‘Welcoming Communities’ programme and have been accredited as an ‘Established Welcoming Community’.

What is Welcoming Communities

Welcoming Communities recognises communities are healthier, happier and more productive when newcomers are welcomed, and participate fully in society and in the local economy.

The programme also recognises a strong and vibrant community, ‘hapori’, is one that enables all of its members to participate in its economic, civic and social life, and where everyone feels included, ‘whanaungatanga’, has a sense of belonging and has opportunities to succeed.

In the Gore district we believe communities that make newcomers feel welcome, ‘manaakitanga’, are likely to enjoy greater social cohesion, and resulting social outcomes and stronger economic growth.

We can provide settlement support information, connect you with relevant organisations and make you aware of workshops, events and activities all aimed at making your move to the Gore District as supported as possible.

Please contact Mark, Welcoming Communities Coordinator at Gore District Council if you have any queries – email or phone 021-327-611
