Global audience expected to follow inaugural Gore-based MAGNIficent Adventure Race

Southland is preparing for a major surge in viewership—both on the ground and online—as the Gore-based 2026 MAGNIficent Adventure Race gets underway from 28 February to 7 March 2026. The event is set to attract significant international attention through the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), with thousands expected to track the gruelling 500km race via live GPS “dot watching,” while locals turn out at key viewing points across the district. Race Director Andy Magness said “It's go time for us here on the Magnificent crew in the final lead up week to the race with thirty teams having entered.”

The MAGNIficent is renowned for drawing a passionate global following of endurance-sport fans, many of whom tune in throughout the week-long challenge to monitor teams' progress through dense bush, high country, and wild coastlines in Southland and Otago. With Gore hosting for the first time, organisers anticipate a record online audience watching the race unfold, supported by strong international competitor interest and the event’s elevated profile within ARWS.

Gore takes centre stage

For 2026, Gore steps into the spotlight as the official host town—following the successful 2025 staging in Lumsden—with the Gore Town & Country Club serving as race headquarters for athletes, organisers, media, and volunteers.

Andy Magness said Gore’s blend of rugged landscapes, accessibility, and strong community support has positioned it perfectly for a global audience: “The MAGNIficent Expedition is more than a race – it’s an adventure that pushes boundaries and creates unforgettable memories. We’re thrilled to bring this event to Gore and showcase the incredible terrain Southland and Otago has to offer.”

Gore Mayor Ben Bell agrees the district is poised for a powerful moment on the world stage:

Prime spectator spots released

With the public-facing route map now updated, organisers expect large local turnout at the most accessible viewing locations, including:

Day 1 Course

• Dolamore Park on Sunday morning
• T1 near the main Gore bridge from late Sunday morning onward
• Additional vantage points across the wider Southland–Otago backcountry These spots have been highlighted due to the high visibility of racers as they transition between disciplines.
