​Gore to Host World-Class MAGNIficent Adventure Race

Southland is set to take centre stage once again in the global adventure racing scene as Gore welcomes the MAGNIficent Adventure Race from 28 February to 7 March this year.

This multi-day endurance event, part of the prestigious Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), will see elite teams from New Zealand and around the world tackle Southland and Otago’s rugged backcountry. Competitors will navigate over 600km of dense bush, wild coastlines, and rugged high country on foot, bike, and pack raft – all while racing non-stop in co-ed teams of four.

Why it matters for Gore

Last year, the race was based in Lumsden, which saw the return of multisport adventure racing to Southland after a three-year gap - now it’s Gore’s turn to shine. With strong backing from Gore District Council staff, organisers say local support has been key to planning an event that will put Gore on the map.

Race Director Andy Magness said Gore’s selection as the event hub is a testament to the region’s stunning landscapes and strong community support.

“The Magnificent Expedition is more than a race – it’s an adventure that pushes boundaries and creates unforgettable memories. We’re thrilled to bring this event to Gore and showcase the incredible terrain Southland and Otago has to offer,” he said.

“I also want to acknowledge the fantastic support from Gore District Council team. Their help in planning and logistics has been invaluable in making this event possible.”

The race headquarters will be based at the Gore Town & Country Club, providing a central hub for competitors and organisers.

Gore Mayor Ben Bell said hosting the event is a huge opportunity for the district.

“Events like this highlight the beauty and spirit of Southland. We’re proud to welcome competitors and visitors to experience not only the race but everything our region has to offer,” he said.

As part of the ARWS, teams will compete under standardised rules with trained referees, and the winning team will earn free entry to the 2026 Adventure Racing World Championships to be held in Corsica, France. Last year’s MAGNIficent winners, Team Sardines, went on to take 4th place in 2025’s World Championships in British Colombia, Canada.

• Show your support: Decorate your business or home with Southland pride, welcoming MAGNIficent racers
• Cheer them on: See them off on Sunday morning or even join the peloton by bike as they head out of town. Other places to catch the action are Dolamore park (Sunday morning) or at T1 near the main bridge in Gore (from Sunday mid-morning).
• 'Watch the dots' all week via the Live Tracking page, find your favourite team(s), and show up to cheer them across the finish line!

The MAGNIficent Adventure Race is an unsupported event, meaning competitors must rely entirely on their own skills and planning throughout the course. Teams receive no outside assistance from friends, family, or fans.

Race staff will transport pre-packed resupply gear to designated transition areas, but beyond that, every decision - what to carry, when to rest, and how to navigate - rests solely with the team.

Even medical care must be managed independently, making this race the ultimate challenge in endurance, strategy, and resilience.
