Fire Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has upgraded certain areas of Southland to a Total Fire Ban, effective yesterday (25 January).
This includes the southern parts of our District. The rest is still under fire restrictions.
Restricted fire season (fire restrictions):
This means most fire types will require a permit to burn, although some activities such as barbequing and cultural cooking are still allowed without a fire permit.
Prohibited fire season (total fire ban):
All existing permits are cancelled, and permit holders are advised to extinguish their fires immediately.
If you’re unsure whether your area is affected or not, or need more information on what you can and can’t do, go to www.checkitsalright.nz.
There's also information on our website, here's the link.
We can appreciate the graph is a little hard to read at this stage - we hope to get an updated one from FENZ soon.
