Southland's 'can-do attitude' impresses
The Gore District Council and other Southland local authorities have come in for praise from the Local Government Commission during its visit south this week.
The ‘can-do attitude’ of Southland’s mayors and Regional Council chair had impressed the commission, which was in the south as part of its Regional Conversations initiative.
"We are especially pleased to have had the opportunity to come to Invercargill to meet local government leaders and hear from them about the opportunities and challenges facing the region, and how they are approaching them," Commissioner Janie Annear said.
"We’ve been particularly impressed with the can-do attitude in Southland’s approach to shared services. We’ve been able to see how this history of collaboration is based on excellent relationships between the region’s four councils," she said.
"The Commission is in a privileged position in being able to share the latest information from around the country about good local government in a rapidly changing environment," Mrs Annear said.
"One of the ways we do that is by learning from the experience of local initiatives such as WasteNet Southland and Emergency Management Southland."
Mrs Annear said the Commission had also been encouraged by the ongoing commitment to maintaining progress in initiatives that will benefit ratepayers and residents in Southland.
