Young performers to be recognised at 2012 community awards
The achievements of the Gore district’s performing artists will be among those recognised at this year’s Gore District Community Awards.
The Gore Operatic Society is sponsoring the latest addition to the community awards’ line up. To be known as the emerging performing artist award, nominations for this and eight other awards opens today.
Operatic society president Geoff Young said the district has produced some outstanding young performers in the past but there has never been the opportunity to recognise their achievements.
“This (the award) is our way of acknowledging the commitment and dedication of those with a passion for the performing arts,” he said.
Adds to diversity
Gore district administration manager Susan Jones welcomed the operatic society’s innovation, saying it added to the diversity of the awards on offer.
“This year’s community awards touches almost every corner of the Gore district, from the environment to sports to business,” she said.
Gore District Mayor Tracy Hicks encouraged people who know of someone who has excelled over the past twelve months to nominate them for the appropriate award.
“These community awards are a fantastic opportunity to bring into focus, at a single time and place, some of the outstanding achievers we have in the Gore district,” he said.
Sir Graham Henry guest speaker
In its sixth year, the awards continues to attract guest speakers of a high calibre and this year was no exception with World Cup winning All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry.
Mrs Jones said the continued support of principal sponsor Solid Energy was greatly appreciated and had been integral in securing Sir Graham as guest speaker. While the gala dinner was still three and a half months away, Sir Graham’s visit had already prompted a lot of interest in tickets, she said.
The gala dinner will be held at the Gore Town and Country Club stadium on October 26. Tickets go on sale towards the end of September.
